iPhone Launch South Africa - MTN vs Vodacom

Michael Robert

There has been lots of talk in the last two days about the iPhone launch in South Africa. MTN has done and outstanding job in launching the phone while Vodacom has gone fairly unnoticed. There has also be lots of talk about this MTN package which you get the phone free on. Lots of people have taken this a face value and not really investigated the contract properly.

I think this is a great offer by MTN and does make iPhone 4 accessible for the majority. There are some things you need to know about the contract first. I have made a comparison of the MTN 200 vs the Vodacom Talk 75s which are the most similar.

If you notice on MTN you get R200 worth of airtime and they say it is about 86 minutes, which is correct unless you phone someone on Vodacom, CellC, Virgin Mobile, then you will pay R2.85 per minute.

Lets say you only phone people on other networks, then you only get 70 minutes. But in a real world neither of these are true. So will give it an average of 75 minutes because there are still people on CellC and Virgin that you might be phoning. And now days we don't even know what network they are on with number portability.

The other thing you will notice is the SMS price during peak hours is slightly cheaper on MTN but off peak Vodacom wins hands down.

Yes I know that MTN gives you 150Mb of data which anyone with an iPhone NEEDS. So make it known now that you are getting free data on this contract and not a free iPhone!!!

Notice how the price difference between a standard contract and a financed option are very similiar?

My final though is - "STOP TELLING PEOPLE THAT THE IPHONE IS FREE ON MTN!!!"

Update: Both of the contracts are financed and no extra fees apply. Vodacom give you the option paying in and not having to pay for the phone over 2 years. MTN just don't say that the phone is financed, very clear marketing!
