Nike To Help Apple Develop iWatch After Ditching The FuelBand?

Michael Robert

Is Nike going to be teaming with Apple for the iWatch?

Ever since Nike announced the surprising news that it was scrapping its rival fitness-tracking FuelBand line of wearables — including a new, slimmer device planned for this fall — the rumor mill has been buzzing with suggestions that Nike is now positioned perfectly to partner Apple for its long-awaited iWatch.

Nike's move away from wearables also comes as Apple's long-rumored iWatch is expected to come to fruition. Apple CEO Tim Cook is an avid wearer of the FuelBand and has sat on the Nike board for the last nine years, which has helped the two brands foster a strong relationship.

Finally, consider also this statement given to The Next Web on the back of the FuelBand firings, in which Nike noted the two company’s shared history:

Partnering with industry-leading tech companies is nothing new for [us]. We have been working with Apple to develop products since 2006, when we introduced Nike+ Running, and Nike has since created iOS Apps including Nike+ Training Club, Nike+ FuelBand and Nike+ Move.

Building on these successful products and services, Nike and Apple continue to partner on emerging technologies to create better solutions for all athletes.

Apple is expected to announce the iWatch later this year along with iPhone 6 and the Healthbook app.
